Mat Mayhem brackets are released!
Mat Mayhem in Fort Wayne Indiana is unlike any other event in college wrestling. All the #1 ranked teams in NCAA II & III, NAIA, NJCAA, and Womens division are in attendance and are the #1 seeded teams in their respective brackets. All five champions from 2015 are back to defend their dual meet titles.
Unlike in Division I when you sometimes get many of the highly ranked teams, all the top teams in the other divisions are showing up to duke it out for the right to call themselves the National Dual meet champions.
A staggering number for the event is that over 60% of all the competing college wrestlers are currently ranked.
Of the 88 competing teams, 70 of them are currently ranked in their division has a team.
In 2015, Marysville came in and nipped the defending champs, Notre Dame, with an exciting 16-15 finals win. Marysville is the Division II #1 seed, followed St. Cloud, Nebraska-Kearney, and Mercyhurst filling out the top 4 seeds. Nine of the current #1 ranked wrestlers are in attendance in D2.
Wartsburg who has been the king of the mountain for the past five seasons at National Duals also starts as the #1. 18 of the 24 teams in the Division III bracket are in the National rankings. Seven of the 10 D3 #1 ranked wrestlers will be in action.
Grandview(Iowa) is seeking their 5th consecutive National Dual title, but must fend off seven other top 10 ranked teams in NAIA. Eight of the 10 #1 ranked wrestlers will be competing.
Clackamas, who is the #3 seed, will have their hands full as they will potentially face #1 ranked Northeast Oklahoma A & M in the semi-finals. Eight of the 10 wrestlers will be in action.
In the women's division, seven #1 ranked wrestlers are also competing on the weekend.
In case you are keeping track, that is 39 of a possible 50 #1 ranked wrestlers competing at the 2016 Mat Mayhem.
All college action will start Friday January 8 at 9AM(EST).
